WINDOW TINT LAWS BY TERRITORY
ALBERTA
It is not permitted to place or install on a motor vehicle a transparent, translucent, or opaque material on or in place of a windshield glazing or side window glazing that is beside or forward of the driver on the right- and left-hand side of the motor vehicle.
It is not permitted to place or install in a motor vehicle a transparent, translucent, or opaque material on or in place of a rear window glazing unless the motor vehicle is equipped with rearview mirrors on the right and left of the motor vehicle.
Glazing installed by the manufacturer of the motor vehicle, clear untinted frost shields, and window stickers that do not impair the operator’s field of vision are permitted.
It is not permissible to place or install any material on or in place of any window glazing that casts a glare on other vehicles on the highway.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
The rear window may be tinted, as may side windows behind the driver. Only the top 75mm [3 inches] of the front windshield may be tinted. If the rear window is deeply tinted to limit visibility to the rear, both left and right side mirrors must be fitted and functioning. Tinted manufactured glass on the front windshield must meet the minimum light transmittancy requirements under the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
MANITOBA
It is not permissible to spray or coat the windshield of a motor vehicle with any substance that reduces the amount of light that is capable of being transmitted through the windshield.
It is not permissible to apply a plastic film or a substance to the windshield, or side or rear windows that reduces the transmission of light below the minimum level prescribed, or that causes a reflection of light above the maximum level prescribed.
It is not permissible to equip a motor vehicle with glass of the type that transmits light in only one direction.
NEW BRUNSWICK
It is not permissible to operate a motor vehicle with windshields or windows that have been treated, coated, or covered with a color spray, other colored material, or any opaque or reflective material that prevents more than 30% of any light from passing through the window in either direction when measured by a photometer.
NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
A person must not install non-transparent, translucent, or opaque material on or in place of the windshield glazing, or on any other window so that the motor vehicle no longer conforms with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
This does not apply to replacement of glazing installed by the manufacturer.
Clear un-tinted frost shields are permitted as long as they do not impair the safe operation of the motor vehicle.
NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
Windshields must be free from a coating of sunscreen or reflective material other than that applied by the vehicle manufacturer.
NOVA SCOTIA
Window tinting is allowed as long as the windshield or window to the direct right or left of the driver’s seat was tinted during the manufacture of the glass, and not applied afterward.
A windshield may be equipped with clear un-tinted frost shields.
A windshield or window must not be tinted in a way that prevents the safe operation of the vehicle.
NUNAVUT
No person shall operate a vehicle unless the windshield and front passenger side windows of the vehicle are free from a coating of sunscreen or reflective material other than that applied by the vehicle manufacturer.
ONTARIO
Windshields and windows may not be coated with any color spray or other color coating that obstructs the driver’s view of the highway or any intersecting highway.
Windshields and windows to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat may not be coated with any color spray or other colored or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle.
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
It is illegal to install transparent, opaque, or translucent material on a front or side window, unless the material is a replacement glazing installed by the manufacturer, or the material is a clear un-tinted frost shield.
It is illegal to install transparent, opaque, or translucent material on the rear windshield, unless the motor vehicle is equipped with outside rear view mirrors on the left and right of the motor vehicle, and the material is a replacement glazing installed by the manufacturer, or a clear un-tinted frost shield.
A person must not place or install any material on or in place of any window glazing that casts a glare on other vehicles on the highway because of sunlight or headlights.
QUEBEC
No material which darkens glass shall be affixed to or sprayed on the windshield of a road vehicle. However, a strip no more than 15 cm in width may be affixed to the upper part of a windshield.
The windows on each side of the driver’s compartment shall admit 70% or more light, when measured with a photometer.
SASKATCHEWAN
After-market tint films or coatings must not be applied to the windshield and front side windows.
YUKON
Application of after-market vehicle glass-darkening material is permitted on all windows except windshield. Tinting permitted on rear window cannot obstruct driver’s view.
It is not permitted to place or install on a motor vehicle a transparent, translucent, or opaque material on or in place of a windshield glazing or side window glazing that is beside or forward of the driver on the right- and left-hand side of the motor vehicle.
